Weight reduction and maintaining a healthy weight are essential components for good health. But weight loss isn’t restricted to merely reducing dietary intake of fat or carbohydrates, it involves a buffered state that incorporates both a healthy diet and exercise into an individual’s lifestyle.
How do I know if I need to lose weight?
One of the best ways to get an insight into your weight is by calculating your body mass index (BMI), it’s a simple calculation which can be accessed here.
For most adults, an ideal BMI is considered to be between 18.5-24.9. If your BMI is above 25, you are deemed overweight. A BMI of 30-40 is considered obese.
What complications can come my way?
If you are overweight or obese, you have a higher risk of the following:
> High blood pressure
> Heart disease
> Type 2 Diabetes
> Stress, Anxiety, and Depression
Public Health England states 62% of adults were overweight or obese in England in 2012. Unless obesity is tackled, the Department of Health and Social Care predicts that 60% of men, 50% of women and 25% of children in Britain will be obese by 2050.
What help and support can I get from the Hub pharmacy?
The NHS Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework lists three different service types that pharmacies are to adhere to; Essential, Advanced and Enhanced. At the Hub pharmacy, we offer a range of services that are specifically linked to weight loss. As a Pharmacist, I readily offer advice on medication that aids in weight loss, whether that be medication on prescription (Orlistat) or over-the-counter in the pharmacy.
Each day I counsel patients on the usage of their medication with Medication Use Reviews, and dependant on the patient, I encourage maintaining a healthy BMI with changes to diet and exercise. Public Health England provides comprehensive trends, overviews, and profiles of local areas. Based on these health inequalities, if you walk into our pharmacy this month, you will see a Healthy Living board dedicated to weight loss tips. Our entire team is here to help and assist, whether that be through weekly weigh-ins or structured diet-plans.
Is there a quick-fix diet?
Hundreds of diets exist and are used by people; The New Atkins Diet, The Cambridge Diet and The Slimming World Diet are amongst some of the popular ones but they are not always the best.
Two specific weight loss programmes which we offer at our Hub pharmacies are the Celebrity Slim and Lipotrim programmes.
Lipotrim is a total food replacement programme, where all your daily requirements are replaced by Lipotrim formula food.
> The nutritional formulas meet or exceed Department of Health and European standards. The diet formula provides all the essential fatty acids, essential amino acids, required vitamins and minerals, trace elements and fibre.
> Lipotrim works by reducing the number of refined carbohydrates to around 5% or less of your daily diet, Public Health England states that most people get around 12-15% each day! By lowering this figure and reducing the daily calorie intake with the Lipotrim programme, your body will soon adjust and stop sending hunger signals.
> If your body’s carbohydrate and calorie intake are significantly lowered, it will begin to undertake a process known as ketosis. Ketosis occurs when the body doesn’t have enough carbohydrates to utilise for energy; instead it resorts to burning down the excess fat an individual may store, thus increasing weight loss.
> Lipotrim ensures a maximum safe rate for weight loss and even provides a programme for long-term weight maintenance. Women can lose a stone each month on average, whilst men can lose on average a stone and a half.
> Those who wish to go on the Lipotrim programme, will get assistance from the pharmacy team and be asked to attend weekly weigh-ins, ensuring safety in weight loss and support to minimise any queries relating to the programme.
> It is gluten-free and suitable for vegetarians, even the chicken flavoured soup!
If the prospect of replacing all your meals with a diet isn’t one for you, then you may consider the Celebrity Slim programme.
> On the Celebrity Slim programme, you are free to eat up to 6 times a day, enjoying a great selection of shakes, bars, and soups. Thus allowing you to eat smaller meals, more often, yet still lose weight.
> At the Hub pharmacy we stock both the TRIM phase which is structured for long-term weight loss and the ACTIVE phase which encourages a more accelerated weight loss with regular exercise included in the plan.
> Patients using the Celebrity Slim programme on average lose anywhere between 1 and 8 lbs each week.
So, if you are overweight and serious about losing weight, come and visit us at your local Hub pharmacy. The Celebrity Slim or Lipotrim programmes could help you reach your goal, knowing you have the expert advice, support, and guidance of highly trained healthcare professionals.
